In the past, I loved to attend electronic and electrical classes in my high school year. However, the part that I hated about was soldering. My soldering work was not perfect and the result sometimes did not work at all because it had crossed over to another cable or cables.
As technology advances, we do not really need to rely on soldering anymore. L-com has released a new DB25 connector which works well for terminating data cables in the field. No soldering and crimping is required at all for all the 25 positions of the connector including the ground.
However, I believe that the high school time nowadays will still be using soldering rather than giving the students an easy time with connectors.
