Italy 2009 – 10/05/2009 – 1st Day

Excited and nervous. We slept around 2330 the day before. Our flight was 0710 and we woke up at around 0300. At 0345, we drove to the Gatwick Airparks before catching a shuttle bus to the Gatwick Airport. We paid around £30 for 5 days parking. The good thing is that customers only need to leave their cars at the reception and the Gatwick Airparks’ staffs will drive the cars into the huge car park spaces behind the reception. The shuttle bus leaves every 20 minutes. By the way, the road to the Gatwick Airparks was secluded and there were very few cars along the road, partly because it was still very early in the morning. Half way through, I was wondering if TomTom navigator was leading the wrong way.

Eventually, we arrived at the Gatwick Airport. The queue at EasyJet counter was very long. We waited patiently. We had already known that we had to pay £16 to check-in a piece of luggage but we never knew that we had to pay at another counter. Unfortunately, we waited for almost 30 minutes just to pay the £16 because the system was down.

The train

At 1030, we arrived at the Fuimicino Airport. Weather was hot. From the Fuimicino Airport, we took the Leonardo Express, which is a non-stop train service to the Termini Station. We paid 11 euro per person. I would consider the Termini Station as the main station for traveling around Rome.

Navigating around Termini Station was easy and immediately, we bought a 7-day Metro ticket for 16 euro per person. Metro is the underground train service in Rome, Italy. It consists of Line A and Line B. The Termini Station is the only station that connects the two lines.

Our hotel was Hotel Santa Costanza, a 3-star hotel. It is located about 10 minutes away from Bologna station while Bologna station is three stations away from Termini. When we came out of the Bologna Station, we stopped at one of the Ice Cream shops around the area; 1.50 euro for two scoops. We stayed in room 215 and the first thing we looked at was the air-conditioning. Unfortunately, we were told that it is the law that air-conditioning can only be switched on after the 1st of June. We wonder if that is true.

The room was tiny but as described. Triple bed but it was two singles combined.

We took a short nap. We then went to the Termini Station again to check out the train services as we planned to go to Florence on the 12th May (Tuesday). We proceeded to search for the meeting point of the tour we had booked for 11th May (Monday). The tour was a combination of two half day tours; In the Heart of Rome and Ancient Rome and Colosseum with lunch included. We had no problem at all finding the meeting point.

On the way to the meeting point, we took some photos. There were a huge roundabout with Fountain of Naiadi and a church just opposite the fountain. After we confirmed the meeting point, we went to a nearby Metro station called Repubblica and we stopped at Spagna station which is near to the Spanish Steps (Piazza di Spagna). The area is not only known as a tourist destination but also well-known as a shopping heaven with big brand names like Prada, Gucci, Emporio Armani, Tiffany and Co. and many many more.

We did not take much photos here as we knew that our tour will cover the Spanish Steps. By the way, we were quite tired at that point of time. There is a Rome Bike service where one can buy a reload card in order to use the bicycles provided. Most of the famous tourist attractions will have a Rome Bike station.

Our journey that day covered places like:

  1. Fiumicino Airport (Leornado Express Train Service)
  2. Termini Station (Metro Train Service)
  3. Hotel Santa Costanza (Bologna Station)
  4. Tour Agency (Repubblica Station)
  5. Spanish Steps, Piazza di Spagna (Spagna Station)

Work in progress : Italy …

The weather is getting better now; bright and sunny. I think Mee and I joined Aquadrome at the right time because it would take longer time to adjust ourselves if we joined during winter. You know, going in and out of Aquadrome when the weather is freezing and having to wear huge and thick jacket is just so inconvenient. At least we are now familiar with the place and come winter, I guess we will need two lockers per person.

My manager is off sick today. I thought of getting a day off next week but maybe, I will talk to my department manager.

Pisa

Hmm… I have to step up a gear in writing our trip in Italy. Otherwise, I will forget all about it. So far, I have written only two days worth of our trip. In fact, I have only completed the first day while the second day is still in progress. All I need to do is to attach some photos and the post about our first day in Italy will be completed.

Broadband connection

Soon our Virgin Media’s Broadband speed will be increased to 10MB once the upgrade in our area is completed. And most importantly, that is a free upgrade. Hmm… I am just wondering how fast it would be or how efficient it claims to be. Downloading a song in less than 1 second?

Well, now I wonder if I should keep our computer switched ‘On’ the next time we go back to Malaysia. That way, I can access our computer files from Malaysia rather than taking my portable hard disk with me which is kind of heavy since I got my netbook to bring back too. The only thing that worries me is that I have to have the computer switched ‘On’ 24 hours a day with the room locked and no supervision whatsoever. Say that I am timid but I am just not prepared to do things which are out of my control.

There is also a device called Slingbox which enables users to view TV programs on laptop or mobile phone anywhere in the world. That way, I can easily watch UK programs while I am in Malaysia. On second thought, I will need broadband access whereas my parents only have dial up connection. Maybe mobile broadband will do the job just fine. There are also other Sling-y products which enables users to network devices such as computer, slingbox, game consoles from different rooms! Hmm…. I believe this Slingbox is better than the traditional TV to PC devices as all it needs is only Ethernet connection rather than composite/RGB cables.

Aquadrome, our second home …

It has been a week since Mee and I joined Aquadrome. We went there almost every night and now we are planning to join the classes. There are quite a lot of classes and we are hopeful that we can find classes that suit our time, which will be in the evening. In addition, I hope to learn swimming too even though I am a bit reluctant. “I don’t like to swim” is the line I always say, or excuse, maybe.

Anyway, it feels great every night after workout and spa. We are glad that we made the right decision as Aquadrome is near to the place we live and there is a huge free parking area. Most importantly, it opens during bank holiday too.

As we came out from Aquadrome yesterday, it was dark already. Mee quoted that it does not feel good to come out from Aquadrome while the sky is still bright.

——————–
My manager is back now. As I said, it does not mean anything as I am still busy. Well, it is good in a way that I have someone to consult. It is good to be busy too because at the end of the day, I will have a taste of Mee’s cooking and a nice workout plus the use of relaxing health suite.

Insurance thoughts

Few weeks ago, I asked one of my old classmates about insurance. I assume that he does not have much experience in insurance since he has only got his licence recently. Well, you know, it seems to be much easier to talk to someone whom you know rather than some strangers selling insurance.

The only thing that I would like to know is the method to pay insurance policy bought in Malaysia while living in UK before going into the types of insurance available. According to him, his brother pays the monthly repayment through his sister’s credit card account but there will be no medical card issued since his brother does not live in Malaysia. For now, I guess I will be looking out for yearly repayment as well as doing some term life insurance comparison before looking at other types of insurance policies. Monthly repayment does not sound feasible to me.

Spring cleaning and Aquadrome we go …

Spring cleaning time! I have been talking about this for such a long time that I think that it is time to take some action. I will now start to re-categorise my posts and I will start from the very first post. This is the 673rd post and I have only gone through the first 8th post. Only time will time if I have the determination. In addition, I ought to do something on my other blog too: All My Reviews. The code is a mess and it is not loading properly in Internet Explorer. Again, only time will tell once I am done with this blog.

One of the reasons of re-categorising this blog is that I need to change the link of all the images from short URL to long URL. Erm… in short, I have to change something like /image/sample.jpg to http://myi4u.me/image/sample.jpg. And the reason behind this is simply because I would like to use the pretty URL plugin that comes with Flatpress. If you just view one of my posts and look at the long URL in the address link, you will see something like http://myi4u.me/?x=entry:entry080129-132340. If I were to use the pretty URL, the full URL will look prettier than that. Simple as that!

—————–

At last, both Mee and I signed up for Gym and Pool membership at Aquadrome. We compared it to the Sports Centre in town but still prefer Aquadrome as Aquadrome is near to the place we live and it has a huge free parking area. We were also surprised because we were not charged for the month of May and straightaway, we used the gym and spa after we got our membership card.

Well, the staff who signed us up was reluctant to encourage us to use the gym before an induction is done. Unfortunately for her, we went ahead and used the gym even though our induction was booked on this Saturday. It felt great since we never did any proper sport activities since we moved to Basingstoke.
